Wheelchair carriers attach to your vehicle and make it possible to store manual wheelchairs during a journey, while the wheelchair user rides along in the vehicle.
Wheelchair carriers range from $350 to $1,600 online. They are generally available in the following four styles:
Automatic car-top wheelchair carriers are equipped with an electric motor-driven hoist that lowers and picks up a manual wheelchair. As the carrier lifts the wheelchair it folds, the carrier then places the chair inside the storage compartment and automatically closes and locks. Car-top carriers are operated by automatic switches.
Bumper-mounted wheelchair carriers attach right to your vehicle's bumper. Most bumper-mounted carriers can be easily removed and reattached to grant you trunk access. Cars with molded bumpers may require a couple of drilled holes in order for this carrier to be installed.
Hitch-mounted wheelchair carriers install easily onto a standard trailer hitch. To use this carrier, pull the release bar to tilt the rack down to the ground. Roll the wheelchair onto the rack and tilt the release bar back into its upright position where it will lock into place. Most hitch-mounted carriers include an anti sway bar, and will support a maximum of 75 pounds.
Pick-up wheelchair carriers are for use with pickup trucks. Fold your wheelchair, and the electric lift will pick up the chair and place it inside the truck's bed.
