Wheelchair canopies are practical apparatuses that secure to a wheelchair and act as protection from the elements. As an alternative to holding your umbrella while trying to operate a chair, a canopy is often a very handy device. Stay cool on hot, sweltering days and stay dry in rainstorms. No matter if you're traveling in extreme weather conditions or waiting for a bus, you will be more comfortable and with a canopy overhead.
It's simple. Canopies are available in varying makes and models starting at around $80 to fit all types of wheelchairs. They are available in many colors such as burgundy, blue and green, so choose the color that suits you best. The apparatus itself is generic so installation is straightforward with easy-to-follow instructions. The hardware includes 2 mounting poles, the frame consisting of 5 interlocking pieces, and of course the canopy material. If done correctly, it shouldn't take more than ½ an hour to assemble everything. Certain models also come with a selection of bonus features, such as drapes or stuff sacs for easy storage. Basically, once the mounting poles are secured, the canopy slides back and forth like a convertible top to a vehicle. You can choose from an array of wheelchair canopy fabrics - from solid nylon to mesh material - with increased ventilation.
Even though a wheelchair canopy is, in theory, a great invention, don't expect miracles. Like an umbrella, water or snow will likely find its way around the device and you will still get a little wet. It's common practice to still wear rain or snow gear under your canopy for maximum protection.
If you have a condition that is aggravated by weather, such as heat or direct sunlight, consult your therapist to see if your wheelchair canopy is eligible for insurance coverage.
