A stair lift will carry a user safely up the stairs in their home. To use a stair lift the user will sit on the lift's seat, the seat will then transfer the user up or downstairs via a mounted track that is attached to the staircase.
Stair lifts are also called chair lifts, stairway lifts, stair glides or stair chairs. Stair lifts are available in straight and curved designs, and generally range from $2,500 to $4,000 online.
Straight stair lifts are for installation on straight staircases. Straight lifts can be installed by the homeowner with ease. They are fairly inexpensive and simple to install compared to curved stair models.
Curved stair lifts are custom-made for staircases with a sub-landing between two sets of stairs, or staircases that are not straight. Curved lifts are typically more expensive then straight models, and because they are custom-built, they are usually impossible to transfer if you move to a new house. Curved lifts require professional installation, and take much longer to be custom-designed, built and installed in your home.
If your curved staircase has a sub-landing, a cheaper alternative is to install two separate, straight stair lifts. This will only be possible if the wheelchair user is able to transfer from one stair lift to the other independently.
