Selling a Used Wheelchair

Selling used wheelchairs may be problematic. Wheelchairs are highly specialized products that require the collective input of a doctor, therapist, mobility equipment provider and potential user to ensure that the appropriate mobility equipment is matched to the user. Wheelchairs are individually tailored medical devices and so they are generally not meant for resale.

If you plan to sell a used wheelchair here are some valuable resources with the proper mobility equipment knowledge to help you match your used wheelchair with a proper owner:

  • Many local Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) offices will often inform clients about available used wheelchairs through newsletters, notices or word of mouth.
  • Ask to place a "used wheelchair for sale" ad on a bulletin board, website or in the newsletter of a local rehabilitation hospital or
  • Phone your state Rehabilitation Department or another local disability organization to see if they can put you in touch with a therapist who can properly match your used wheelchair equipment to a new user.

It's true that ads might sometimes appear in the classified pages of the daily newspapers, and on supermarket bulletin boards. Pawn shops, second-hand stores and websites like eBay might even accept used walkers, wheelchairs, etc. However, it is best to steer clear of this type of unregulated, unprofessional salesmanship, as these companies generally have no interest in matching the proper equipment with a suitable user.
