Even though some motorized scooters come apart for transport, some vehicles will not accommodate the large pieces. The heaviest piece on a scooter is its base, which can weigh up to 30 pounds. If your caregiver is not able to lift this piece into the back of your vehicle, you may require a scooter lift.
Scooter lifts cost between $350 and $3,000 online, and are available in interior and exterior models:
Interior or inside scooter lifts are vertical crane lifts that raise your scooter into your vehicle. Inside lifts are typically wired to your car or van's battery and can be bolted either to its floor or to your van's side doors. The post of an inside lift can be disassembled for trunk installation.
Interior lifts are also available in platform models that attach to seat mounts in SUV's, vans, and some station wagons. A remote control powers the lift outward and lowers it to the ground so you can drive your scooter onto it. Once your scooter is secure, the remote raises it into the vehicle.
Exterior or outside scooter lifts when space won't permit an interior lift this platform-style lift is necessary. Outside lifts attach to most standard hitches on the rear of your vehicle. A remote hand control lowers the lift to the ground so you drive your motorized scooter onto it. Once your scooter is secure, the lift is elevated.
Platform lifts are also available in tilt models that slant down like ramps. The scooter is driven onto it, then secured and the platform returns to flat for transport.
