Cooling Wheelchair Pads

Individuals in wheelchairs have enough obstacles to overcome just trying to navigate through day-to-day life in a chair. Crowded sidewalks, narrow store aisles and stairs everywhere do little to make it easier for those with mobility challenges. It takes a lot of energy to tackle the twists and turns around a grocery store or a household and this kind of exertion can work up a sweat. For someone in a wheelchair for the entire day, this situation can be very uncomfortable. Every now and then a product comes along that's designed to make life a little easier. In this case, consider trying out a cooling wheelchair pad.

Cooling wheelchair pads are basically the opposite of a heating pad. They generate a cooling sensation by absorbing body heat that is caused from day-to-day activity. They are excellent for relief when a wheelchair user gets too hot and uncomfortable when sitting. A standard cooling pad is 18-inches x 14 ½- inches and can easily slip inside a pillowcase or under the seat cover of a wheelchair seat. These pads are designed to keep you cool for hours and effectively soothe sore muscles and relieve stress.

There are a couple models of cooling wheelchair pads on the market. The earlier styles required the user to fill the cushion with water until it is absorbed for the cooling effect to occur. This can sometimes be messy and inconvenient, as it's recommended that the process be repeated every 2 weeks. A more contemporary cooling wheelchair pad is an all-natural, non-toxic material that contains a substance called mirabilite, along with salt, water and herbs. Covered by a flexible, waterproof fabric, the interior contents of this pad have an impressive ability to absorb heat from anything that is warmer than the pad itself.

Wheelchair cooling pads can work for hours, absorbing heat and releasing a cooling effect. To regenerate the product, simply leave it out at a regular room temperature (75-degrees or below) and the heat its absorbed will disperse in the air. The pad will be ready to be reused multiple times over. For quicker regeneration, place your pad in a colder area. If you want almost instant regeneration, pop your cushion in the fridge for a few minutes.

For your convenience, most wheelchair cooling pads come with a carrying case for easy portability. Even if you don't use a wheelchair, consider a cooling cushion for long flights, fishing trips or if you spend a lot of time on buses or sitting at the office. They're ideal for everyone!
