Commodes
A commode is a device that can be used as a toilet. A commode can also be positioned above a toilet to create a toilet frame and raised toilet seat. Commodes are built to fit most standard sized toilet seats and most models can also be used as self contained units. A commode can be wheeled directly over a toilet seat because it has a wide base. Commode seats come in various widths, depth and height and many of them can swivel 360 degrees.
There are different types of commodes available for wheelchair users and those with weak legs. Some commodes -such as bedside models - are made to stand alone with legs. However rigid commodes, foldable commode shower chairs, tilt shower chairs are also available to provide safe passage in different areas around the home.
Commodes with wheels can serve as rolling commodes or shower chairs. These commodes are made to be sturdy and strong, but they are relatively lightweight and easy to move. Many models can be quickly folded and unfolded for easy storage and transport.
Bedroom commodes usually include removable commode pails, lids and splash guards so you can use them when you aren't able to make it all the way to the bathroom. You can also empty them without having to transfer the whole commode to do so.
Commode shower chairs are made out of materials that won't rust, corrode or stain and most of them come with rear tipping pads and toggle brakes. Some shower transfer benches double as commodes because they are made with openings in their seat.
Commodes can be found with seat covers and removable back rests for versatility. Some even have accessories for added safety and comfort - such as seatbelts, arm rests, foot rests, padded seats and locking casters, mounting bars and ankle straps. Most commodes are also fully adjustable.
Commodes come in assorted styles, designs, colors, shapes and sizes. Most models are built to carry a specific weight so make sure your commode is built to handle your size and body weight. Some commodes come assembled and some require assembly. Because commodes are hygienic devices, most manufacturers won't let you return them. When shopping for a commode make sure you find a model that is comfortable, durable and will fulfill all of your needs before buying it.
