Wheelchair Repair Training

Question: I would like to receive some repair training, have any suggestions where to start? thank you ~Beth

 

Answer: A good place to start is our article on easy wheelchair repair  and our blog post on wheelchair repair training. Some manufacturers - Permobil, for example - offer service training for their products. RESNA (Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology Society of North America) offers a credentialing program for assistive technology professionals, including Rehabilitation Engineering Technologists. For ongoing specialist training, the NRRTS (National Registry of Rehabilitation Technology Suppliers) is a good resource.

I would like to repair/refurbish/rebuid wheelchairs that are donated in less-than-usable condition. We reapir what we can & donate them out to folks without any insurance or governent aid through our Fraternal Order. We're covered under Good Samaritan Laws & are also a 501 c 3.

Is there a place to obtain these at little or no cost? A few of us would like to lear now to maintain and/or rejuvenate what we can.

I have worked on my own manual chairs so I have some ideas of what to do, but would like to make sure we're doing things correctly.

A thoughtI had for you is that you could possibly intern somewhere that does rehab and wheelchair service work.  We often have interns for admin work, so I see no reason why a reputable company wouldnt allow you to intern for a week or two.
