I’ve been searching for wheelchair tire covers that slip on over the tire to prevent soiling carpets. None of the local wheelchair suppliers are aware of such a product, but I'm sure I saw an advertisement for them in a magazine a few years ago. I would appreciate any help in locating these products?
Wheelchair tire covers seem to be pretty popular wheelchair accessories – especially for those with hardwood and carpeted homes. The covers are just like slippers for your feet – you slip them on when you go outside and take them off before coming back indoors so you don’t track dirt all over your white carpet. Well, wheelchair wheel covers work in just the opposite way. When you come in from outside just slip a wheel cover over each wheel on your chair so you don’t track any dirt, leaves or outdoor contaminates into your home.
I just did a quick internet search online for “wheelchair tire covers” and got a slew of results back. The covers are made out of foam and fabric with elastic edging, so they just slip on over your rubber wheels and slip off with ease. They are designed to come on and off easily, so even many wheelchair users can slip them on and remove them without any help. Another great feature is that you can throw your wheelchair covers in the washing machine if they become soiled.
Wheelchair tire covers are made to fit average wheelchair tires that are up to 61-centemeteres (or 21-inches) in diameter. I only came across companies that sold them in pairs, and the cheapest price tag I came across was for $40 online.
