Standing Aids

Question: I am a t-6 paraplegic and have been in a wheelchair for 20 years. I have leg braces to help me stand, but I'm looking for a standing table that will assist me in standing when I am wearing them. If you know of anyone who provides these would you please send me some information? ~Mike

Answer: There are a variety of standing devices on the market to choose from. They offer people a variety of positions and provide varying amounts and placement of supports. Some devices will require another person to help you rise to stand; while other devices help a person to stand on their own. Most types of standing aids can be adjusted for growth or changes in your physical condition. Some standing aids are quite simple as they are built out of wood and have foam support pads. Others models are high technology devices that are more complicated and heavier. To determine what type of standing aid you need, you should be evaluated by a physical or occupational therapist and your doctor. These professionals will take into account your age, abilities, and disabilities before determining what type of standing aid will suit you best. They will be able to tell you if you need a mobile or stationary standing aid and if any special features or adaptations should be added.
