Wheelchair Widths

Question: Before selecting a wheelchair, I need to know the widths they come in to see which one will fit my body the best. We will have to modify our home for wheelchair accessibility, so this info is critical. ~Frank

Answer: Shopping for a new wheelchair is a very individual experience because each and every wheelchair user will have different features and needs in mind. I advise you to consult with your doctor or occupational/physical therapist before purchasing a wheelchair as they prescribe a wheelchair based on the user's age, gender, body type (weight/size) and any physical specifications - such as level of endurance, missing limbs and body limitations.

I can tell you that most standard wheelchair seat widths can range from 14- to 22-inches wide and weigh between 39- to 50-pounds and can carry weights from 200 to 350 pounds. Standard wheelchairs typically range in height from 19.5 to 20.5 inches.

For those who need a little extra room, a heavy-duty wheelchair, also referred to as an extra-wide model, generally offers widths from 22 to 48 inches and can carry anywhere from 350 to over 1,000 pounds safely. Heavy-duty wheelchairs offer reinforced frames, upholstery, wheels & bearings.
