Ramp Standards

Question: I am a supplier of shelving and would like to know what the maximum incline that a wheel chair ramp should be? ~Tony

Answer: A standard ramp is gradual enough for powered wheelchairs to climb safely, but remember that every power wheelchair is different. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a standard ramp should have a grade no steeper than 1:12 - or, for every inch of height, there should be 12 inches of run length. For example, this formula would suggest that a ramp leading to a door with two 8-inch steps should be at least 16 feet long.
