Standard Restroom Door Widths

Question: I am in the process of building disabled toilets in my restaurant. What is the ideal width that the bathroom door needs to be to accommodate a wheelchair? ~Guy

Answer: The minimum width of the restroom door and cubicle door may differ. Depending on where you live, there may be certain rules and regulations you must follow. Many counties have specific building codes regarding disabled restrooms and you need to look into this before you start building. The first thing you should do is check to see if anything exists in your area as this may save you doing any modifications to the restroom in the future. There are also many other things to consider when building a disabled restroom. You may be required to install other devices such as pull rails, the right amount and type of floor space, the right height and accessible toilets and sinks, etc. You may also be required to have an anti-skid floor installed in the restroom. An emergency cord is also a good thing to install in case of an accident or emergency.
